COLORS OF AUTUMN

Sunshine shimmers through leaves of orange, red, and yellow

that gently dance in rhythm with the cooling breeze.

Landscapes stand ablaze across rolling hillsides

cascading into vibrant hues of dark red foliage along roadsides.

Vivid purple, yellow, and rust-colored mums

gracefully frame flower beds in delicate softness.

Oh, the splendor of autumn ablaze in its glory…

deliberately fading as leaves flutter slowly downward.

I hope you are enjoying the many shades of autumn–such wonder to behold! At the same time, there is an awareness of a definite shift happening rather abruptly, bringing crisp coolness to the air and shorter days.   As the season transitions and the final colors of autumn begin to fade away, what do you perceive– a beginning or an ending, life or death, renewal or degeneration?

Creation Continues…

Observing the bright colors of autumn remind us that God’s continual creative hand is upon our universe and in our lives.  There is grandeur in His creation and in the world; there is brilliance in me…in you.  Our Creator is always working even when we cannot see or feel His presence.  God is alive!

“While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night Shall not cease.”         Genesis 8: 22

Seasons Shift…

Life becomes so busy…so full, moving at a frantic pace that often leaves us breathless, harried and unable to observe the wonders of creation around us.  However, thereis always a choice in front of us.  There is a time for rest and renewal…a time for work and accomplishment…a time for new beginnings and a time to accept change gracefully.  A time for life and death…there is a season for everything and a choice to be made on how we will react…how we will allow God to use each season to nurture us.  Change can be strengthening and affirmative.

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every [a]purpose under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.”  Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8

God Guarantees…

God is faithful; His promises hold true.  He is always with us, and His Word endures forever.  Through all the transitions and challenges in life, His truth reigns.  The sovereign God of the universe continues to be in control and ever will be.  Accept His words of encouragement and truth that can fall into your soul afresh with meaning and purpose.  God’s Word shows the way!

“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”  Isaiah 40: 8

What is so special about color-filled leaves from a tree?  Scientifically, leaves are naturally orange and yellow.  As the days become shorter with less sunlight, trees stop producing chlorophyll which is the catalyst for the green.  This season change allows the green leaves to be left with their true colors.  Some trees skip over the yellow and orange stage and go to red which means the chlorophyll stops flowing and the tree produces anthocyanins (the red color).  (Not being a scientist, a Google search was required!)

In my opinion, this is not just a scientific phenomenon; this is the glory of God’s creative plan showing through once again.  One tree and its leaves are important to God, and He planned out the life of that one tree.  He uses the changing of seasons to send a message about life.  The cycle of deciduous trees reminds me that we have a beginning and an ending, but with Christ, our ending here on earth is a beginning in heaven.  When we appear to be dying in this world, there is a promise that we will be resurrected with God.  God has our entire lives in His hands from before our births.  What more does God plan out for you and me who are created in His Image–we who are made to naturally praise our Creator?  Yet we so often fail to see the creative touch of God in our lives even when God’s amazing colors are everywhere.

Your current perspective on life will determine how you view the remarkable colors this fall:   Should you slow down, allowing God to revitalize your spirit with freshness?  Is it a time to rest and be still, waiting to be rejuvenated before the next season of activity?  Are you needing to lean on the Lord, admitting that you require His help and His truths to lead you through your current challenge?  Is each new day a gift from God for which you are continually showing gratitude? Or is there a reoccurring attitude that demands adjustment?  Life can happen, and the seasons can just run one into another.

Where are you in the spectrum of colors this autumn season?  Are you struggling with an issue that keeps you anxious, unsettled, or in the dark?  Is this a season that is too busy, too many demands on your life that keeps you going nonstop?  Are you truly connecting and walking in the light with the God of the universe, Jesus our Savior, allowing the Holy Spirit to fill you anew with inspiration and wisdom ?  No matter where you are right now, no matter what you are going through, God is aware of your situation.  He loves you and is with you, but He is also waiting for you to recognize the fact that He has created you to be in alignment with His creative design for your life.  Stop…observe the colors of autumn that are bursting force all around.  God’s creative touch is everywhere…even in YOU!

Gently, ever so gracefully, one by one a leaf floats…

to the ground…

Falling silently, peacefully piling up one leaf

at a time below its life source…

Leaves tumble down in gusts of brisk autumn winds

branches becoming stark and naked…

But the tree is not dead—the foliage which was so exuberant with color is gone,

but the Creator is not.

God’s hand still works in a lifeless looking tree,

waiting for its dormancy to be replaced with buds opening to new life in the spring.

I hope you appreciate the colors of autumn in a more vibrant way.  May your spirit be invigorated and your soul revived as the blessings of our Creative and Colorful God fall afresh in your heart.

Just Kathy…enjoying this season of color

  4. The colors are glorious here in the Pacific Northwest as well! Our neighborhood is full of plant nurseries and several blocks away there is a blueberry farm filled with rows of about four foot tall blueberry bushes blushing in rosy reds. They have prompted me on more than one occasion to thank God for the beauty of His creation and allowing me to have the senses to be able to enjoy and appreciate it even in the waning part of the life cycle of blueberry bush leaves! Thanks for encouraging me to celebrate the Lord’s creative process both around and in us, Kathy!
