In His Image

A couple of weeks ago while exercising at the YMCA, I met a young Asian woman who was doing the splits perfectly.  Both legs were flat on the floor–one leg in back of her and one in front.  This feat caught my attention because I have never been able to do the splits perfectly, much less now at my age.  She continued her workout as I did my final lifts with weights.  By the time I ended, I had to commend her on her agility.  She had such a sweet demeanor yet strong determination about her.  Smiling, she shared that she was born without a hip on her left side and could not walk.  She was told as a child she would never walk.  Continuing her story, she gives the glory to God for the medical procedure and the belief she held strong even as a child that she would one day be able to walk.  Her commitment now is to stay in shape and be productive to be used by God.  Her story touched my heart, and upon leaving, I encouraged her to continue believing great things.

Do you believe in great things for your life?  What we believe is important, but who we believe is the bigger issue.  We can believe truths, or we can believe lies.  It depends on the voice we choose to listen to, or the voice we choose to believe in, or the voice that gets our attention the quickest.  In our world today, many voices vie for our attention constantly, and distractions are everywhere.  Distinctive voices encourage and spur us on, but other voices breed negativity and bring us down.  In fact, it is often difficult to know who to listen to and what to believe.  Ultimately, we have a truth we need to put above all the noise–you and I are created in the image of Almighty God.  God is Creator, and He wants the best for each of us.  As a child of God, you and I can trust His voice, but too often our hearts can deceive us and bring emotional chaos, leading us away from our Creator.  Subsequently, the voice you and I choose to listen to affects our beliefs, producing actions that portray heartfelt thoughts—whether good or bad.  “As a man (or woman) thinks in his heart, so is he.”   Proverbs 23:7   Therefore, what we believe about God is crucial, probably more vital than any other beliefs we carry in our hearts.  His voice should be heard above the rest because God as Creator designed you and me in His image.

God knows my thoughts, my words and my actions

“O Lord, you have examined my heart
and know everything about me.
You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
You see me when I travel
and when I rest at home.
You know everything I do.
You know what I am going to say
even before I say it, Lord.

You go before me and follow me.
You place your hand of blessing on my head.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too great for me to understand!”       Psalm 139:1-6

Rather daunting, isn’t it?  God knows you and me inside and out; nothing is hidden.  In our human condition, we forget that there is no place to hide from God—there’s nothing we can do to remain anonymous.  A creator does not abandon His work.  Like a father, He does not leave His children unattended; He desires a relationship with us where His truths may be displayed through our lives.  For me, I am unable to determine why He loves me so much; His blessings astound me more than I will ever comprehend.  Bottom line, I do not have to totally understand God, but I do need to believe that God’s ways are higher than my ways and His thoughts higher than mine. (Isaiah 55: 9)   Therefore, He is trustworthy and loves me for who I am…in His image.

Oh, the wonder of his knowledge.

God created me…

He designed you and me.  You and I are his workmanship, his masterpiece!  He knows the number of hairs on our heads.   “Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.” Luke 12:7

God’s character goes into the creation of every individual.  He designs each baby as a unique, one-of-a-kind human being—oh, the intricacy that must be involved!

“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.”    Psalm 139: 13

The wonder of a baby is a fascinating study of creation. Every minute detail is a testament of God’s love for a new being–so fragile and innocent yet filled with endless possibilities.    One tiny baby can place a spark of hope in the hearts of those personally connected with this new life.  However, the designing part does not end at birth.  As children grow, God’s work is never finished.  He continues working on each masterpiece because we each are created in His image.

Oh, the wonder of His craftsmanship.

The God of the universe recognizes I am His Child

He knows my name…not just mine, but yours and each person who has ever been born on our planet Earth.  “I have called you by name, you are mine…”  Isaiah 43:1   What a declaration from God about how important you are to God.  Names are important to God, and He wants us to recognize His voice.  Why not?  A Creator surely knows His handiwork.

He meditates –thinks on me…on you.  His Spirit is always ready and willing to work within us.  He knows my heart– all my thoughts, feelings, and desires — good and bad.  He knows your heart.  Do we recognize and affirm that?   Are we aware that we matter to Him?  He loves us unconditionally even when we disappoint Him or have sinned against Him or even turned completely away from Him.  In His never-changing, ever-loving character, God pursues each one of us—seeking that opportunity when we reach out to Him allowing Him to work afresh in our lives.

Recently I came across this quote by John Piper: “God is always doing 10,000 things in your life.  And you may be aware of three of them.”

I cannot begin to fathom doing 10,000 things at once. The closest I come is when I act like a crazy woman bustling around trying to get a multitude of things done when under an important deadline.   Piper is referring to the God of the universe who I apparently often limit in my finite mind.  What blows me away is that if God is doing 10,000 things in my life and in your life, how does He have the means to do this in each of the 7.6 billion people in the world (as of April 2018)?  I cannot wrap my mind around that one, but God is who He is.  He is the creator, a limitless being, the one and only sovereign God of the universe.

“How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!”  Psalm 139: 17

Even when you or I mess up, He does not give up on His wayward children created in His image.

The wonder of His GRACE!

Your beliefs are vital to your physical health, your mental well-being and your lasting relationships.   Do you believe great things for your life?  Do you believe God wants great things for you?  Or do you believe self-limiting convictions, even lies, that automatically limit what you believe about God?  God is personal!  He is your Father.  How well do you know your Creator?  How often do you put your trust in Him?  How often do you listen to His voice above the rest?  Truth is you and I could spend a lifetime and never truly know Almighty God.  Just knowing the facts about God is not good enough—your beliefs must be heartfelt, giving life-renewing energy.  I believe it should be a daily quest asking God to reveal more of Himself to me.   He knows me well, but how well do I know Him?

“Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.

Point out anything in me that offends you,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”   Psalm 139: 23-24

My words will never truly convey the grandeur of our God.  But in His image, we are made; we live and breathe because of Him.  The greatest gift from God is for Him to allow us to know Him.  Permit God a closer connection in your life…listen to His voice, follow His ways.  Remember, you are made in His image; you are truly a masterpiece.

God designed me in His image, His image, His image…

Oh, the wonder of it all

No other God above or below

Oh, the wonder of it all

God knows my name

Oh, the wonder of it all

God places His hand of blessing upon me

Oh, the wonder of it all

I am a masterpiece in progress

Oh, the wonder of it all

God loves me unconditionally

Oh, the wonder of it all

Because of Jesus, I am offered GRACE

Oh, the wonder of it all

I am a Daughter of the King

Oh, the wonder of it all

He allows me to know Him, love Him, serve Him…

Oh, the wonder of it all

Today, live like the masterpiece you are!  Oh, the wonder of it all!                                                                        Blessings…as you listen more closely to the voice of your Creator.

  1. Oh, the wonder of it all, indeed! The last few days I have used the word “astonishing” in regard to noting the Lord’s presence and involvement in my life. His attention to detail is astonishing in His creation and in my circumstances. However, in the moment, I often get swamped with feelings of doubt or discouragement and need to stop and gain positive perspective from the Word as you have helped me do through this post. Thanks for writing, Kathy.

  2. Kathy:
You have done it AGAIN, so moving, so profound and right to my heart.

Your gift continues to GROW! Love watching God refining His masterpiece.
